Arrange icons by modified in a music folder

Windows XP often does some really annoying things, such as automatically customising a folder, changing it’s kind into “music”, when it detects that the folder contains music files.

Although for some people this might be useful, for me it’s not. Often I’ll want to sort the files in a folder by different fields, NOT the ones that music folders have.

Easy, I thought, it’s just a case of changing the folder customisation kind back to “Document”. Wrong.

Here you can see the default “Arrange Icons By” menu, that comes with a “music” folder…

But we don’t want this, we want our standard fields back!

In Explorer, go to View -> “Choose Details”.

A dialogue will appear…

From here we can choose date modified, and various other “details” or “fields” that we’d like to “arrange icons by”.

Enjoy!

    Thanks, that actually helped me.
I used to always arrange my icons by date and recently I wasn’t able to.

Sure, but is there a way to make windows stop “classifying” my folders as “music” ? Manually changing the sort-by fields back every time is tedious. Cheers

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the worst thing that plagued all versions of Windows since 98 (including Vista): it just guesses how I would like to view at a folder (thumbs, list, detail…) instead of just listening to my choices and stick to them.

Thank you so much. I got so annoyed when my C drive automatically changed itself to a music folder, everything I saved would stay where it was, it would go to alphabetical order. Really helped, thanks very much.
